Fort McDowell Donates Money to Support Nebraska Casino Bid
The Fort McDowell Yapavai Nation has shown support for the three Nebraska tribes that are pushing to get approval for an off-reservation casino by donating $250,000 to their cause.
The donation is the largest single contribution to the three tribes, the Santee Sioux, Omaha and Winnebago, representing 60 percent of the tribes' total campaign fund. The fund is used to finance the signature-collection drive that is needed to gather enough signatures needed to put the gaming law amendment question in the November 2006 election ballot.
The tribes however, failed to meet the required number of signatures in time according to political consultant Ben Thompson. But the three tribes are already working on getting it on a future ballot, in the hopes that the casino would pave the way for economic development and job opportunities.
The three Nebraska tribes came to seek the support and counsel from Fort McDowell, as the tribe is noted for its success in the gambling industry. Fort McDowell also recently unveiled a new slogan, "Never give up. Always give back."
Even after a standoff with the U.S. and Arizona state government in 1992 concerning the removal of slot machines from the tribe's casino in which it prevailed, the tribe's business continued to flourish. Fort Mcdowell now employs more than 2,000 people and has enjoyed a continually growing revenue over the years.
"We have a long track record of being successful and promoting our right to self-governance and self-sufficiency," said Fort McDowell General Manager Orlando Moreno. "It's an honor to be looked at by other tribes as a resource."
